About Us

Our Story

It started with an owl.

During our first campaign together, an NPC asked our party for a name. One of our players, whose character had an owl familiar, blurted out “The Owlettes!” It made us laugh, and it stuck. When we decided to form a company, there was no other name for it.

We (clearly) weren’t founded in a boardroom. We were a group of colleagues and spouses playing games after work to unwind. We’re now scattered across four states, but the game continues. Our roster isn’t made of full-time game designers; it’s a mix of software engineers, people managers, a K-12 educator, and a researcher. That blend of backgrounds gives us a balance that has kept us a tight-knit group for years.

The idea for Owlette Publications solidified after one particularly memorable Mutants & Masterminds campaign. Our GM had built an intricate island setting that we all loved. After the campaign ended, he suggested we publish it. That idea became our first product, the Isla Bermeja gazetteer, and the framework for our company was born: take the creative work that goes into the games we love and share it.

Two of our seven members were brand new to TTRPGs when they joined our table. We remember what it’s like to learn the ropes, and we have eight children among our families with whom we want to share our passion. That’s why our products are designed to be accessible. We aim for “budget-friendly” because we want to create things with a low barrier to entry for everyone, including ourselves. And we integrate whimsy into our company because, frankly, that’s just who we are.

We believe in collaborative storytelling, and learning from our mistakes. Sometimes spectacularly. In one campaign, on the brink of defeat, a player deployed a cursed “Instant Fortress” from their inventory in an attempt to save us. We didn’t know the exact nature of the curse. It turned out the fortress came with a resident vampire, who promptly emerged and finished us all off for a TPK (that’s “Total Party Kill”, which means… well, you can probably tell).

That’s us. We’re the kinds of people who will deploy the vampire fortress. We’ll have a good laugh about it, and we’ll come back next week to start a new story. We hope our work helps you do the same.
